Tweed Heads South is a suburb situated south adjacent to Tweed Heads in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, in the local government area of Tweed Shire. Tweed Heads South is in the state electorate of Tweed and the federal division of Richmond. Tweed Heads South sits on the Tweed River and Terranora Creek, which form its northern, eastern and western border. Tweed Heads South is found between Tweed Heads to the north and Banora Point to the south.
Following the European settlement of Australia, Tweed Heads was initially a timber getting area, and was subdivided in 1888. In the 2011 census, Tweed Heads South recorded a median age of 52 years - 15 years above the national median, owing to the area’s popularity with retirees thanks to its sunny, warm climate and tranquil beachside atmosphere.
Tweed Heads South is connected to Tweed Heads by the Tweed Heads West & Pacific Highway Bridge, which crosses Terranora Creek. While Tweed Heads South is largely built up, its eastern portion on the Tweed River is entirely green, with the Coolangatta & Tweed Heads Golf Club found in the suburb’s southeast.
