Bilinga is a southern beachside suburb of the Gold Coast in Queensland near the New South Wales Border. The suburb forms part of the local government area of the City of Gold Coast. Gold Coast Airport occupies the majority of Bilinga. The suburb’s remaining streets are largely residential and situated in its east, next to the beach. Bilinga is found between the suburbs of Coolangatta to the east and Cobaki Lakes to the west. The suburb overlooks the Coral Sea and its southern border is the Queensland New South Wales state border.
The suburb’s name derives from the word ‘Bilinba’ meaning bats. Bilinga adopted its name in 1918 and served as the name for Crown lands north of Coolangatta. A man drowned on Bilinga Beach in 1937, which led to the formation of the Bilinga Surf Lifesaving Club in 1938. Bilinga received 50,000 cubic metres of sand in 1989 as part of a beach nourishment program. In the same year, Coolangatta Airport, which occupies the majority of the suburb and first opened in 1936, was renamed Gold Coast Airport.
Gold Coast Airport, which is partially located in New South Wales, is situated in Bilinga’s southwest. The Queensland New South Wales border forms the suburb’s southern border, crossing Gold Coast Airport’s runway so that the airport is partially located in New South Wales.
