Murwillumbah is a town situated southwest of Tweed Heads in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, in the local government area of Tweed Shire. The town sits in the foothills of the McPherson Range in the Tweed Volcano Valley, 13 km south of the New South Wales Queensland Border, and 132 km south of Brisbane. Murwillumbah is found between Kynnumboon to the north and Byangum to the south.
The name Murwillumbah is believed to be derived from an Aboriginal compound noun meaning “camping place”. The original inhabitants of the area were the Kalibai people. Following the European settlement of Australia, timber-getters were drawn to the Murwillumbah area in the 1840s. The town is particularly vulnerable to floods, with the worst inundation taking place in 2017.
Murwillumbah’s town centre is based around Wharf Street, on the western shore of the Tweed River. Adjacent to the town’s retail area are the Tweed Regional Aquatic Centre, Murwillumbah Civic and Cultural Centre, and Murwillumbah Library. Murwillumbah Golf Club is situated in the town’s southwest, on Rous River next to Wollumbin High School.
