Tugun is a coastal suburb of the Gold Coast situated northwest of Tweed Heads. Tugun forms part of the local government area of the City of Gold Coast. The suburb enjoys warm weather and a tranquil beachside atmosphere. Tugun sits on the Queensland New South Wales state border. The suburb is located between Currumbin to the north and Cobaki Lakes to the south.
Tugun is believed to be named after an Indigenous word meaning “breaking waves”. Following the European settlement of Australia, Tugun Baptist Church opened in 1925 in the area. Tugun Bowls Club was established in 1967. The meeting points of the Pacific and Gold Coast highways were notably traffic-clogged, but had this situation remedied with the completion of the Tugun Bypass in 2008.
Tugun Beach is the suburb’s primary beach and is found in Tugun’s east, on the Pacific Ocean. A number of holiday resorts are found along the beachfront. Currumbin Wildlife Hospital is found adjacent to Tugun’s northwestern border. The suburb is home to John Flynn Private Hospital, which is based in the southwest, next to Hidden Valley Reserve. Gold Coast Airport is situated next to Tugun’s southern boundary.
