South Murwillumbah is a locality situated southwest of Tweed Heads in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, in the local government area of Tweed Shire. South Murwillumbah is in the state electorate of Tweed and the federal division of Richmond. South Murwillumbah sits opposite the town of Murwillumbah, which is found across the Tweed River. A bridge on Wollumbin Street connects the two.
South Murwillumbah had a notably higher median age to the Australian median in the 2011 census. Like the larger Northern Rivers region, South Murwillumbah is popular with retirees thanks to its warm climate and tranquil beachside lifestyle of which it enjoys proximity. Murwillumbah railway station, opened in 1894 and closed in 2004, is heritage-listed and today operates as the town’s tourist information centre.
South Murwillumbah’s built-up areas are concentrated in its centre and along the Tweed River, opposite the town of Murwillumbah. The area is connected to the town of Murwillumbah by a bridge on Wollumbin Street in South Murwillumbah’s northwestern corner, at a bend in the river.
